Download maps for offline: save a U.S. state before your next trip
Learn how to download a state or travel region, test it without service, and plan around the limits of offline maps.
A map that works without service can make ordinary travel planning more resilient. Before a road trip, hike, relocation, or visit to a rural area, take time to download the region you may need and confirm that it is available offline.
This is preparation guidance, not live emergency instruction. During an active incident, follow current instructions from emergency services and official authorities. An offline map can support planning, but it does not show every closure, hazard, or change in road conditions.
Choose the region before you leave
Start with the state, national park area, or travel corridor you expect to use. If your trip crosses a border, include the neighboring region instead of assuming one download covers everything. Add extra coverage around airports, alternate routes, lodging, and meeting places when practical.
The goal is not to save every map in the country. Choose the smallest useful area that covers your planned route and reasonable alternatives. Larger downloads may require more storage and more time, especially on a limited connection.
Download state maps on a reliable connection
Use Wi-Fi or another connection you trust when possible. In an offline maps app, look for the option to download a regional map pack or map area. Give the download time to finish, and check that the region appears in your saved or available-offline list.
If you use Survive Link, regional map packs can be downloaded for local use. You can also save pins and routes and keep a last-known location on the device. Live place lookup requires connectivity, so search for addresses, businesses, or destinations before you lose service.
The website itself cannot provide app features without a network connection. Downloaded maps and local planning information must already be stored on the device.
Save useful pins and routes
Save the places you may need to identify quickly: your lodging, trailhead, vehicle location, meeting point, fuel stop, pharmacy, or family destination. Keep labels short and clear. A saved route can help you review a plan, but it does not prove that roads are open, safe, or currently passable.
Routing is only available when the needed routable road graph has been downloaded. A visible map is not the same as offline routing. Test the complete route, including the starting point and destination, before departure rather than assuming directions will work later.
Test the map with connectivity off
After downloading, use your phone’s airplane mode or another safe way to disconnect from cellular data and Wi-Fi. Open the map, zoom into key areas, view saved pins, and check whether your planned route works offline. Restore connectivity afterward.
This test can reveal incomplete downloads, missing road data, low storage, or permissions problems. Keep the phone charged, and consider carrying a printed overview for a long trip. A map does not replace situational awareness, local knowledge, or official updates.
Keep plans current and simple
Review saved maps before each major trip. Delete regions you no longer need if storage is limited, then download updated coverage while connected. Keep a written backup of important addresses, phone numbers, and meeting details.
Offline maps no signal situations can still involve uncertainty. Carrier messages and official authority broadcasts are authoritative when available. Survive Link’s alerts, where applicable, are supplemental, cached, and best-effort; refreshing live alerts requires connectivity. Use the app as a local planning aid, not as a promise of signal, routing, safety, or message delivery.
A few minutes spent downloading, labeling, and testing a map can reduce avoidable confusion before your next trip.
